There's a new kid in town and everybody's talkin'!
There's a new kid in town selling more traditional style motorcycles than Harley Davidson and Triumph combined. This kid is not exactly new, however...
Royal Enfield motorcycles got its start in 1901, and as such can lay claim to being the oldest motorcycle manufacturer in continuous production (Triumph in 1902 and Harley Davidson in 1903). All three of these brands produce beautiful classic motorcycles, but the unit sales differences between them bespeaks a strategic play on the part of Royal Enfield to focus their lineup on the 350cc to 650cc market segment. A segment which encompasses both newer riders and older experienced riders whose primary goals of owning both a classically inspired motorcycle, and one they can easily handle, steers them away from larger, heavier options.
Royal Enfield's global unit sales results speak for themselves... In rough terms, (as the 3 companies reporting cycles are not identical) Royal Enfield's global sales of 1,024,539 motorcycles (fiscal year April 2024-March 2025) stand out against Harley Davidson at approximately 132,535 units (2025 calendar year) and Triumph at 141,683 units (fiscal year July 2024-June 2025).
Aside from their strategic focus on bikes under 650cc, what is the magic that seems to be pulling people in at record numbers to Royal Enfield dealers? Well, it's the motorcycles themselves. Beautifully crafted old school designs that epitomize the classic British motorcycle aesthetic, made in a variety of colors, styles, and for a variety of purposes. Whether you fancy a classic scrambler, cafe-racer, cruiser, or want to travel cross country through Nepal on an adventure-tourer, Royal Enfield probably has a motorcycle that fits the bill.
Then there's the mechanicals... Wonderfully simple single and twin cylinder motors that have been re-engineered to modern standards of reliability and performance, all the while keeping close to their British air-cooled roots. High quality fit and finish and mostly metal parts add some weight but keep the experience vintage and analog. Indeed, my 2024 Royal Enfield Meteor feels as substantial and meticulously crafted as my 1999 Harley Davidson 1200C.
Riding the Enfield I feel like I'm stepping back to a simpler time. And that's the way I like it...
